Millie(HelenTwelvetrees)isanaiveyoungwomanwhomarriesawealthymanfromNewYork,JackMaitland(JamesHall).Threeyearslater,unhappyinhermarriageduetoherhusband'scontinuedinfidelity,sheasksforandreceivesadivorce.Becauseofherpride,shedoesnotwanthismoney,however,shealsodoesnotwanttoremoveherdaughterfromacomfortablelifestyle.SheallowsJackandhismother(CharlotteWalker),toretaincustodyofMillie'sdaughter,Connie(AnitaLouise).Focusingonhercareer,sherisesthroughthehierarchyofthehotelwheresheisemployed,shunningtheattentionoftherichbanker,JimmyDamier(JohnHalliday),preferringtheattentionsofthereporter,TommyRock(RobertAmes),although,duetoherpriorsourrelationship,refusestomarry.Eventually,Millieispromotedtotheheadofoperationsforthehotel.Atthesametime,TommyisofferedalucrativepositionatthebankbyDamier,asafavortoMillie.However,atthecelebrationparty,MilliediscoversthatTommy,justlikeMaitland,ischeatingonher.Betrayedasecondtime,Milliebecomesverybitter.Withherfemalecohorts,HelenandAngie(LilyanTashmanandJoanBlondell,respectively),shebecomesawomanwholovesagoodtime,floatingfrommantoman.Thisgoesonforseveralyears,untilshehearsthatDamierhastakenaninterestinherteen-agedaughter,Connie,whobearsastrikingresemblancetoMillie.MilliewarnsDamiertoleaveherdaughteralone,but,althoughhepromisestostayawayfromConnie,heignoresMillie'swarning,andtakesConnietoaremotelodgetoseduceher.Millieistippedoff,goestothelodgewithagun,confrontsJimmyandkillshim.Inthefollowingmurdertrial,Millietriestokeepherdaughter'snameoutofthepressandclaimsnottorememberwhysheshotJimmy.Shesaysthatanotherwomanranoutofthelodgeaftertheshotbutclaimsthatshedidn'tseewhothewomanwasandhasnoideaastotheotherwoman'sidentity.TheprosecutionthusclaimsthatMillie'smotivewasjealousyofJimmy'sromanticrelationshipwiththisunknownotherwoman.Millie'sfriends,however,helptobringoutthetruth,andwhenthejuryfindsoutthatMillie'struemotivewastoprotectherdaughterfromJimmy'slasciviousintentions,theyacquither.Intheend,Millieisreunitedwithherdaughterandherestrangedhusband'sfamily...
